I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY by Janine Allen

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

Is a Boxer Right for You?

IS A BOXER RIGHT FOR YOUR FAMILY? 

The Boxer is an amazing breed but not for everyone. Please take a few minutes to read this short list to see if the Boxer is possibly the right breed for your family. 

Are you an outdoorsman? 

Boxers do not tolerate extreme hot or extreme cold.  If your ideal companion is one that hikes through the trails in winter for hours on end, the Boxer may not be your best choice. 

Do You Have An Exercise Plan?

What are your plans for exercise. Boxers are very intelligent and active so they need a good amount of mental  and physical exercise. Being a larger breed they are not able to get the energy all out indoors so you have to take into consideration if you have time to walk the pup each day. In addition the Boxer needs mental stimulation through training and learning new things. Remember, a bored Boxer can be a bad Boxer. 

Do you want a serious breed? 

Although Boxers are workers they are also clowns. Even those awarded Schutzhund have been known to give a good kidney bean when preparing to get petted. This can frustrate some owners and you must decide if this  is something you enjoy about the breed. This is a staple of their personality and part of what makes so many  owners of the breed love them so. 

Are You Looking For A Guard Dog? 

So many Boxers end up being abandoned because they are often sought to be a guard dog. Although very capable of protecting their family, the breed is not aggressive by nature and bad owners often cannot train them to be aggressive leading to them being abandoned. If you are looking for surveillance invest in a security system, not another living creature. 

Do You Have Children?

If you have children,  Boxers are a great breed. As with any breed, you must put forth the effort to train, train, train - but the Boxer is a great family pet. All of the Boxers I have owned have seemed to sense a  child is small and would typically lie on the floor allowing the child to be taller and play gently. What you must take into consideration is the time restraints and if you will be able to both care for a young child and train any breed of dog. 

Do you mind a 60-pound lap dog? 

For us, we wouldn’t have it any other way! Boxers are very affectionate and need constant interaction with its family. If you prefer a dog that is independent and often goes off on it’s own to play you are looking in the wrong place. The Boxer will follow you from room to room and can not stand it when it is not by your side. 

Can You Give Unconditional Love?

This goes for any breed and is a must. One of the most amazing things about dogs is that they are capable of giving unconditional love to their owners no matter what happens. You must be willing to give the same back in return, as this is what a dog really wants.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS 

 

After reading all the information on Boxer's as a breed you and your family have decided to take the next step.  Now what?

Here are some answers to your questions:

Do you adopt out of Province? Unfortunately at this time RAB is only able to adopt within the Vancouver Area.  If you live in other areas and would like to adopt, please click here and view other rescues.  Contact your local Boxer rescue for more information about their available dogs, there are so many wonderful dogs that need forever loving homes.

What is the process?:  After you fill out an application, one of our volunteers in your area will contact you to set up a home visit.

• You must be at least 21 years old 
• Please familiarize yourself with the breed if you've never owned a Boxer before and be sure that they are the right choice of breed for you, as the Boxer is a different breed of dog.   Is the Boxer right for you?
• If your application is accepted, you will be contacted by a volunteer for a home visit.
• We then come to your home and do a home visit and meet your family and learn about your family dynamics and what type of dog will be a good fit.
•  If all goes well, we will then match a  dog to your family.  Then after signing an adoption contract and paying the relevant adoption fee you can welcome your new family member!

Why is a home visit necessary?:  This has nothing to do with judging a home, but more for getting a feel for how your house works and what type of boxer will fit perfectly.  Family dynamics are so important to making adopting a dog successful.  This gives us an opportunity to answer any questions or concerns.  By doing this we are able to get a feel for the neighborhood you live in, get an idea about your kids and their knowledge of dogs, to meet your cat and its nature, to meet your resident dog and what they would like and not like in their environment.  This is an opportunity for a meet and greet and having a volunteer help you to be successful.

What is the adoption fee?:  Our adoption fee's vary depending upon the adoption.  Please speak to your RESCUE A BOXER volunteer for more information.

Jackson & Milo are a dynamic duo looking for a new home

Meet Jackson and Milo. They are a bonded pair. You see they aren't birth brothers but they have been together for a long time and rely on one another. These two are your typical Boxer boys. Full of energy and full of love and full of Boxer wiggles for EVERYONE! Jackson is Milo's big brother. And he looks up to him as a little brother should. They are a couple of hams and have so much fun together. Unfortunately due to a change in family dynamics this dynamic duo is finding themselves looking for a new home. They are great with kids (who understand dog boundaries) and prefer a house with no cats.
