Thank you Jennifer. Brigette was spoiled, and demonstrated both a childlike lack of patience at having to wait to open her gifts, and an enthusiastic show of her ability to open her present despite lacking opposable thumbs. Teeth and paws work well together. She continues to delight us with her affection and desire to be in the middle of all that we do. We are working on the challenge that she is presenting us off her desire to be aggressive with dogs and people we meet on our walks, particularly men. Trying to find some training for socialization. we have had good luck with introducing her to family members and their dogs (cats are out of the question). She is willing to accept them into her pack once she has been properly introduced. However that is not always possible on walks. SHe seems to get anxious, hackles up, growls, and a little nippy. We're are keeping her on leash and working at reminding her that we are her alpha people and will protect her, we stay relaxed, and when she does, its worth a treat.

We are still very happy that she has joined our house and thoroughly enjoy her, minor challenges and all,

A Rescue Dog’s Christmas Poem

`Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
Every shelter is full – we are lost but not found,
Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
We hope every minute that someone will care,
They’ll come to adopt us and give us the call,
“Come here, Max and Sparkie – come fetch your new ball! !”

But now we sit here and think of the days…
We were treated so fondly – we had cute, baby ways,
Once we were little, then we grew and we grew -
Now we’re no longer young and we’re no longer new.
So out the back door we were thrown like the trash,
They reacted so quickly – why were they so rash?

We “jump on the children”, “don’t come when they call”,
We “bark when they leave us”, “climb over the wall”.
We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
Now we suffer the consequence of the errors they made.
If only they’d trained us, if only we knew…
We’d have done what they asked us and worshipped them, too.

We were left in the backyard, or worse – let to roam -
Now we’re tired and lonely and out of a home.
They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-bye…
“Maybe someone else will give you a try.”
So now here we are, all confused and alone…
In a shelter with others who long for a home.

The kind workers come through with-a meal and a pat,
With so many to care for, they can’t stay to chat,
They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer…
We know that they wonder how long we’ll be here.
We lie down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads…

Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears -

As another year is almost over, we say goodbye to 2011 and get ready to welcome 2012 by reflecting on the successes of 2011.

WBBR has an amazing team of volunteers who work very hard to make all the magic happen. We are grateful to have such wonderful people who help us to achieve our goals. Volunteering can be sometimes a very difficult thing to do and can be both draining mentally and physically. But the rewards are worth all the hardships that we endure. Thank you to each and every one of our volunteers for everything you do. Your dedication and love for the dogs is tremendous!

A big thank you goes out to all our supporters and donators. It truly is a team effort with a very important goal in mind. Your support is immensely appreciated. We are very lucky to have the support and generosity that you provide.

WBBR experienced many successes, including the Annual Pub Night fundraiser, and Boxer Walk. We have made many new friends along the way and have lost many close to our hearts. The footprints in our hearts will always remain and the memory of our loved ones will live on forever.

WBBR has some pretty amazing families that adopt from us. One of these amazing families adopted Reegan. We would like to give this family a big pat on the back for the hardwork and committment for working thru Reegan's seperation anxiety. This family never gave up and continued to love and support Reegan. Thank you to you from the bottom of our hearts!

Hope you remember Reegan. So these are some of the summer pictures of us out and about.
He is doing fantastic and he is a real sweetheart. He is very smart and athletic and he is growing more everyday. It took him awhile to really
put on some good weight and getting onto the winter season he even is putting on some fat and extra hair. At first I thought I had shrunk his coat before I realized he had just
gained weight. I had to buy him a new winter coat anyways.
Meia the little half boxer is deceiving with her size but actually outruns Reegan most of the time. Now that the snow is here his longer legs are a bit of an advantage and it drives Meia nuts being outrun.

He is very healthy and super smart. He knows all his commands and is a real gentleman with our daughter. All our separation anxiety has resolved itself now that he is secure in his surroundings and when we travel he also stays way more relaxed and will settle quicker as well.
I'm excited to say that I'm moving into the twentieth century and getting myself a cell phone with a great camera and look forward to sending you pictures of Reegan in northern Canada.

If you have any questions about him please email me, and thanks very much for all the support. Lots of people have been asking us about him. (They are quiet the good looking pair!) I let them know about your great organization and how great it is.

Bridget Jones finds love in her forever home

Hi Jennifer and Matt, well we are home now. Our pup was a little on the sad side when she realized we were not all going somewhere together. We did join her in the backseat to warm her up on the ferry, something which seemed to cheer her up somewhat. She is a snuggler. Bridget checked out the whole yard, and has really given our house the once over, found the toys we had stashed on a table (seems to know what a frisbee smells like as she made a beeline for that), and as you can see, found the snuggly we had planted on her pad down here on the main floor. We sat down to watch a little tv and she just climbed right up on our lap and joined us in a group tube watch. Think we got a pretty good fit here Jennifer. THanks for the confidence and care you gave her which seems to be serving her well during this transition, Dirk and Mary Ann

Does Fido have Kennel Cough? It's as common as the human cold - Don't Fret here are some tips to help

It is unfortunate that healthy dogs --even those belonging to the most cautious of owners-- are at risk of falling ill from time to time. An owner whose dog has become sick is not necessarily a careless owner, just an unlucky one. Analogous to human infections, canines are at risk of fast-acting, quick-spreading bacteria that can cause both species a world of pain.

Kennel cough is an example of such an infection; one that is transmitted to a healthy dog who finds himself in close proximity to a sick dog. Ideal conditions can include animal shelters, kennels and even veterinarians’ offices.

The disease becomes airborne when expelled from a contaminated dog’s body, and, in close quarters, aligns itself to the inside of the trachea of another. A cocktail of viruses then spreads, among it the causative agent of infectious bronchitis, Bordetella bronchiseptica.

Symptoms appear three to fourteen days after the viruses have become transplanted in their new host, and generally last seven to twenty-one days. Dogs infected by kennel cough suffer harsh coughing spells that has them hacking throughout the day, but has little effect on their playfulness, alertness, or appetite.

Although kennel cough cannot always be avoided, preventative measures can be taken. A dog’s environment has a lot to do with its health, including, but not limited to, crowding stress, dust, cigarette smoke exposure, cold temperatures, and poor ventilation.

Most infected dogs can recover without the use of medication or treatment, although a dog’s recovery can be hastened by the presence of antibiotics or cough suppressants.

There is a question concerning the effectiveness of vaccines (injectable as well as intranasal), because of the fact that kennel cough is a localized infection, thus is an infection that does not lend itself to prevention by vaccination. The vaccination’s potency must also be boosted annually, and sometimes fails to completely prevent the illness.

While a French proverb states that, “A dry cough is the trumpeter of death,” luckily, it is untrue in this case. Life-threatening cases of kennel cough are rare; however, a misdiagnosis of symptoms could prove fatal when other potentially deadly illnesses, such as pneumonia, are mistaken for kennel cough. Furthermore, because a dog’s failure to overcome the illness over a prolonged period may suggest an underlying condition, check with your local veterinarian if symptoms do persist.

Treating Kennel Cough

A dog's ability to overcome kennel cough hastily has as much to do with what happens outside of the body, as it does in regard to what goes on inside of it. Although the illness is self-limiting — typically disappearing after less than 3 weeks' time, — measures can be taken to ease the dog's discomfort, by shortening the amount of time the cough lasts. Listed below are several treatments that have all proven useful in combating kennel cough.
If you dogs developes kennel cough please consult with your veterinarian for treatment. Along with prescribed antibiotics, you can also follow thsese alternative treatments:

Internal Treatments

Vitamin C

Found in most home medicine cabinets, Vitamin C doubles as an ingredient in many of the costly kennel cough remedies found on the market today. Vitamin C, or L-ascorbate, is an effective, reasonably priced nutrient that boosts the immune system and fights infections in humans as well as dogs. When placed in the dog’s food, it helps to provide relief by strengthening the dog’s natural defense system, thus, considerably cutting the amount of time the it has to contend with kennel cough.

As it does with humans, the recommended dosage of Vitamin C varies in direct relation to bodyweight. Consult with the dog’s veterinarian before dispensing the vitamin as it can, in excess, cause irritable bowel syndrome. Again, it does depend on the size of the dog, but a healthy dose usually falls in the range of 2-3 daily servings of 500mg.

Garlic & Echinacea

Dogs that have weak immune systems are more likely to get infections; including, but not limited to, respiratory sicknesses such as kennel cough. A proactive dog owner should look to strengthen a dog’s immune system well before any symptoms befall their pet by staying current with supplementation of vitamins and minerals. However, a reactive approach is also effective in treating an infection like kennel cough. Garlic is antibacterial and antiviral, and is great for the immune system. Although it is available in odorless capsules, anyone who knows dogs is aware that because they are not the pickiest of eaters, they will eat fresh cut garlic.

Echinacea is another viable option as it, too, is an effective herb in enhancing the immune system, for both owners and their four-legged friends. These capsules are also generally tasteless and odorless.

Environmental Treatments
Isolation

The first, and most important, action taken by the owner of a dog who is aware that his-or-her pet is infected, calls for the immediate isolation of all known infected dogs. Because the illness becomes aerosolized and reproduces rapidly, it follows that the separation of the haves and have-nots is of utmost importance; perhaps the final word in treating kennel cough is containment.

Humidifier

Dogs that have kennel cough should be kept warm, comfortable, and dry. A temperature-controlled room promotes an environment in which the illness can be overcome quickly, and one where congestion can be broken up. A dog that can breathe easily allows its owner to breathe easily, knowing full well that their pet is on their way to recuperation.

Coupage

A popular technique used in physical therapy called coupage helps free respiratory secretions. A cupped palm should gently, briskly, and repeatedly tap against the dog's chest. Coupage loosens some of the deeper secretions and helps clear them by moving them into the airways. The infectious materials are then finally expelled from the body when the dog coughs. Performed at least four times daily, coupage should be continued for the duration of the cough.

Rest

Kennel cough is a respiratory infection in nature, distressing the throat and lungs. Until the infection has passed, disregard the dog’s pleas to exercise; aerobic exercise will exacerbate the illness, setting back the dog‘s recovery.

Hi Shannon,

I hope you've had a great summer! Nica had an awesome time travelling across the country with us - we went all the way to Halifax and back by car. She loved the ride and camping and got lots of great hikes, walks, swims and stick-chasing time on the trip. I've attached pictures of her at Drumheller, Banff, somewhere in Manitoba, a beach in Nova Scotia and Peggys Cove! Quite the adventure, but she was a fantastic companion the whole time.

We couldn't be happier with Nica - thank you for finding us such a sweetheart! Like most boxers, all she needs is exercise, discipline, a good diet and lots of love and she gives it back ten-fold! She regularly goes to the beach to swim and fetch a stick and to the endowment lands for a run. She is great with kids, dogs and cats, which was a huge help on our trip to visit friends and family. As you can see from the pictures, she's a muscular little lady and loves a good summer day!

We would love to adopt another boxer one day, but we're not quite ready for two just yet :)

WBBR would like to thank everyone for their love and support. We have had a very successful and wonderful year. In fact in 2010 we helped over 110 dogs find their way into forever homes.

Our adopters, who have opened up their homes and their hearts to our dogs. You have all been able to do what some have not…… You have been able to see past the history of the dogs and the scars and still see the true beauty that each and every dog has inside them and to love them for that beauty. Kali & Blaze a Match Made in Heaven - Boxer Heaven that is!!!!

Hi Jennifer

Good news it was not my bed they were in it was Julie's!!!
These two are now eating out of the same bowl. Both lick of the opposite sides of a spoon. I was told he has a tendency to bolt so that will be there first order of business to get him to come when called. If he is so attached to Kali it will be much easier. She comes at a gallop. They have truly had an instant bonding. This will make it much easier to bring Blaze around.(The grand daughter picked this one.) Kali & Blaze ----- hummm.

We will probably get Blaze to our vet with in the next couple of days. Is it OK to get a chip put in if he does not have one?

I guess I just got his seal of approval he came over and climbed up into my lap.
My yard has not had a workout like this for some time. I now remember why We had no grass. The family came over to meet the new one. Three grand daughters two boxers one Shiatsu and a very large bucket of tug toys and fuzzy toys. Everyone will be sleeping well tonight.

Noelle & Brutus update - wonderful!

Hi Sheri

It's nice to hear from you. The Summer is going well. Too much work, but at least we're all off to Vancouver Island tomorrow for a break (doggies too). Noelle and Brutus are doing well, although Noelle has a new tumour. It's in between her toes and the vet says that to operate would probably require an amputation. So for the time being it's being treated with a steroid to minimise irritation and it doesn't seem to be much affecting her quality of life at the moment. The reality is that at some stage she'll succumb to tumours, but she's still a happy, sweet dog (she doesn't like any other dogs apart from Brutus, but we work around that).

Meanwhile, Brutus has grown fast and is a beautiful dog. He's responded well to training is all but one respect. He just loves to play with all other dogs and if he spots one in the distance will just bolt and become completely deaf ! But given that there's not an ounce of aggression in his interaction, it's not a real problem and we'll continue to work on the distance commands. He'll be very sad when Noelle eventually goes and we'll probably then need to look at another companion.

Anyway, they're a delightful pair and are both very happy. I'm attaching a couple of pictures.

Now that you've mailed me it's reminded me that i never set up a monthly donation which I will now take care of.

Tiger Lily now Sneakers

Hi, Jennifer.

Sneakers is doing well. She is really adjusting to our family and Bo and her are getting on pretty well. They mostly ignore each other, and sometimes they play. Every day they seem to lay closer and closer together! :)

We went camping on the weekend, and Sneakers did very well. She travelled well and seemed to enjoy all the adventures we went on. She met lots of people and dogs.
I have signed us all up for dog obedience classes with Poochies here in Courtenay. It starts in the middle of August. I have heard a lot of good things about their training, so we are excited about that, and they encourage the whole family to come so we are all on the same page which is a great idea.

Ichabod WBBR's Green doing fabulous & all grown up

This is Ichabod. He is one of the many mange puppies that WBBR had last summer. He is living life large on a farm with his little fur brother & senior fur sister. As well he has a couple of human children to play with too. Ick spends his days running free on over 100 acres of farm land with his family. When he gets tired he just jumps into the golf cart and has a nap while mom tends to the farm.

Hi Ladies

Just an update on our boy...he went to see the specialists at Can West about his leg. Good news, no further operations, just lots of physio...so he is now swimming at the therapy pool 4 days a week along with massage, acupuncture and pain relief. Tomorrow I am starting ground poles in the sand ring at the barn.
He IS doing very well!!

He is now standing on his bad leg to lift his good leg to pee! Hoorah Bentley!!
We love him to bits, he loves his Dad especially.

Maddison and Precious welcomed 2 Dobermans in to our rescue last night. The girls have come from a situation that has become out of control. Due to personal reasons the dogs have not received the needed social skills to live in the "real world". The girls have never been off their property and are not socialized with other dogs/noises/situations etc. The girls were paralyzed with fear when they were taken from the property yesterday. After a night to settle everything seemed the same this morning. The girls spent the morning working with 3 Sit Happens trainers and after a couple of hours the girls started to come out of their shells. They were starting to come when called. Get up and simply walk. The girls have a long way to go but today they showed signs of being dogs and not just empty shells.

With their new lives comes new homes. Today the Sit Happens trainers re-named the girls. Maddison is now Addie and Precious is now Hope. Watch for photos and updates on the girls. Along with the addition of 2 more dobermans tomorrow.

Hi Alison,

Just wanted to let you know that Apollo is doing great at our house! He is a very mellow gentle guy and he is great with Adriana! He absolutely loves Tim (which makes Tim soooo happy). He seems to be just so happy to have a home. He is learning some basic skills and settling in well. I will send more pics in the future but these were a couple I took recently. His scars are healing up really well and the fur is already growing back (yeah for him!).

Gretta Update - Finally Home

Hi Shannon,

Thanks for getting in touch. We are all doing well, especially Gretta. She's snoozing next to me right now. We think she's absolutely wonderful and charming, plus she's a great fit for our lives. She's been enjoying our weekend hikes, so we're looking forward to more in the summer. We've taken her to the beach twice, she loves visiting my parents' house (on 55 acres) with us, and she is popular at our frequent dinner parties.

I was at an artist residency for the month of March in the Cascade Mountains, and I was able to bring Gretta with me. It snowed almost the entire time, and she had so much fun. We hiked a few times a week.

Gretta's health seems very good--her vet says we picked a gem, but we already knew that.

We are very happy with Gretta and she is very content to be part of our family. We really appreciate all of the people from WBBR who made it possible for us to adopt her. I'm attaching some photos.

Hi Kerri

Things are going great. Nala is growning like a weed, she's all legs and feet. Aramis and her get along great, they're new best friends. She's great at work, she loves to meet and greet all the clients and their puppies. And is very well mannered. The only time she makes a sound, is when she needs to go out to the bathroom, other than that, she's as quite as a mouse. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday she gets to go to the back and spend the afternoon with our accountant and her dog Bugg, he's a Boston Terrier. The boys love her, they come to all of her Puppy classes, and are very eager to help with the training. She's the youngest and smallest in her class, but she can really hold her own. Everyone can't believe how smart she is, and how quick she picks things up, I personally think that she's the brightest in the class. Grandma & Grandpa have fallen in love with her as well, She has Grandpa totally wrapped around her little paw. Even with her growing so much, he still lets her snuggle up on his lap. On another note, I wanted to let you know that I put in a application to be a Foster Parent. I cant't help but falling in love with all of them, and would love to help out in any way I can. Please let me know. Talk to ya soon

WBBR Presents......the Bernie & Kisses Show!

I am in LOVE! I spent some time yesterday with Bernie & Kisses and WOW I'm so amazed at how amazing these dogs are. They are so well behaved and obedient. They seriously are like an old married couple! When they are sleeping if Bernie starts snoring too loud, Kisses nudges him as if to say "Hey honey roll over your... snoring!" and Bernie wakes up and rolls over!

Kisses is named perfectly. She does this cute adorable thing with her lips as if she is blowing you kisses! It melts my heart -:)

Bernie is a man's dog. He loves the big guys and just wants to hang out with you in your "Man Den" and watch the game.

What's even more shocking to me is that they are STILL looking for their 4-ever & ever home!

Well, its that time again… a quarterly update on my beautiful Carley! As you can see from the photos, she is doing fabulous. We haven’t been to the beach as much as she would like so she is probably a pound over weight, but spring is here so we’ll be hitting the beach very soon. I just can’t get over how wonderful she is, and I love telling everyone her story. I hope that by telling everyone where she came from, it will generate some more interest in adopting rescued dogs as opposed to other alternatives. Everyone she meets absolutely adores her! He's been doing really well, getting along great with our dog Kailey, she's finally started wrestling/boxing with him and letting him touch her while he sleeps lol. I didn't think he'd put on that much weight in the last couple weeks but when I went to put his collar on 2 days ago I had to make it over an inch wider than when we first got him! He's had his second set of shots and no reaction so far like he had with his first set. I'll keep you posted on any new developments!

I won the Puppy Lotto

I don’t remember much before I was rescued by boxer rescue in LA. I think I was about 8 months old, I know I was very scared and always shaking in fear and very scared, running with a pack and as I was lowest in the pecking order only had a few scraps to eat each day and sometimes nothing. It was not a good life, but I did my best to survive. I do remember injuring my paw.

When Boxer Rescue took me I was put in a large crate and there were many dogs there. I did get food each day and was taken out by the volunteers. As I was not used to people I would hide in the back of the crate and shake although they did their best to make me feel loved and cared for they only have a limited amount of time. No one wanted to adopt me as I did not look like a real boxer, even if I felt like one. I was very small, undershot jaw and still had my original tail. The fact that I was always frightened and shaking did not encourage anyone to take me.

Then one day the lady from Vancouver, Canada that finds homes for dogs came down to take some dogs back to Canada and went by my crate. Although I was not scheduled to be taken to Canada she felt sorry for me and was sure she would find me a home and the next thing I knew I was in a plane, in the crate on my way to Vancouver. It was very scary for me.

When I arrived I was taken by one of the dog trainers from Sit Happens Dog Training to her home with her 2 dogs as she had volunteered to work with me to make me “adoptable”. She was so patient and kind to me and after a few weeks I felt safe and cared for and I could now act like a real dog. Although I still felt scared she took me for walks every day, gave me food and treated me like her own dogs.

Then one day at the park another lady and her husband came to take me, they had agreed to adopt me and took me home with them. Again I was scared as I just go used to the other home. When I arrived at their home I was greeted by their 7 year old boxer (Emma) and immediately she thought I was a baby they brought home for her. Worked for me. She licked me all over and within a day I realized that she was my new Mom and that I was safe.

It took some time for me to get used to everything, but my owners were very patient and kind with me and my new Mom gave me all her toys and food and is always by my side. Since I have been here I have put on 22 lbs. and am starting to look like a real boxer. I am also allowed to bark.

I am now a very happy dog, I know I have a forever home, a boxer bodyguard and even thought I have chewed a few things, and had a couple of accidents (not my fault) my owners take it in their stride and continue to work with me. I am so lucky and happy. Every day I go for a walk, get lots to eat and play with my bodyguard. Life is good.

I know that I would not be in my forever home without the kindness and dedication of the volunteers and Boxer Rescue and I thank everyone for taking the time to care for a little homeless puppy.

So you see I did win the puppy lotto.

Dexter (BRLAs Jacob) - Adopted May 2010 - Great Job! We are so proud of Dex!!

Hi Coralee,

We adopted Dexter (previously known as Jacob) from WBBR last May. He turned two just this past February. I just wanted to give you an update of how incredible he is! Attached is one of the very few photos we can get of him looking serious (I had my wedding photographer take it last april when he was at my parent’s house with us!)

Dexter is doing so amazingly well; everywhere we go, people exclaim over how beautiful, calm, and friendly he is! He absolutely loves dog parks, Ambleside in West Van. Particularly, because he can swim in the ocean there, and chase crows and seagulls to his heart’s content! Believe it or not, he is one of the few boxers who actually swim! Even on the coldest days he loves to chase ducks in the ocean, when no other dogs will even swim!

On Mondays Dex and I go to Paws Ahead agility classes in Burnaby; he is the top of his class! We initially did a set of obedience classes, and after working with him on our own, we began agility classes last November or so. Dexter picks up on new things very quickly; I think his favourite parts are the tunnels and jumps, although he does very well on the teeter-totter, which is hard for most dogs! He has so much confidence; it doesn’t phase him to slide or fall off anything, which really helps in agility! I’m hoping to go in a few beginners competitions with him in the spring/summer!

In terms of cat friendliness; whereas he once had great fun chasing our poor white cat, he now adores him! Each day he’ll run up to the sleeping cat, stick his big muzzle in the cats fur, and inhale deeply, as if checking his scent! Luckily the cat puts up with this, or else walks away if the dog gets over-excited! But they eat side by side, and although it took a number of months to achieve this, they get along great now!

Anyways, overall he is an amazing dog, and we couldn’t be happier! Each day, I drive Dex over from Port Coquitlam to my parent’s place in Fraser Heights, Surrey, where he spends my work day with one of my brothers and parents. Most days he is taken to dog parks, or goes for hikes. After work I swing by, pick him up, and bring him back to our place for the evening. On weekends, we dog-share as well; he spends half the weekend with us, half with my parents! It is a great arrangement for him; he is unfailingly excited to both get to my parents, and to my place, and gets the most exercise of any dog!

Anyways, I hope all is going well with you and your beautiful girl boxer! She must be a gorgeous young girl by now!

Noelle & Brutus are Forever Home

Remember Noelle (Noel)? Noelle was our Christmas miracle. You see this old gal was adopted out 9 years ago when she was just a young adult. For some reason or another she found herself picked up off the street and in a shelter in Spokane. WBBR brought her home to Canada with the help of many wonderful people. Everyone wanted to help this senior gal find her way home and everyone pitched in to make it work.

Noelle was fostered with a puppy named Brutus and they fell in love instantly. One day we were contacted by a nice family saying that they wanted to adopt Noelle and to give her a forever and loving home. Unfortunately its not very often that we get many applications for senior dogs. Many people have different misconceptions about adopting a senior. But this family defintley loves their seniors and they know that age is really just a number. They know there is no guarantee to life at any age.

We told them about how bonded Noelle & the puppy Brutus were. And how much they loved eachother. It was apparent to them they did not want to break them apart, so they also adopted Brutus!

What a truly wonderful and happy ending for both Noelle & Brutus. These babies have found a home together with lots of love and companionship, thanks to the kindness of many volunteers.

Meet Wall-E, WBBR's newest medical baby

Wall-E (named by my children) returned from LA a few days ago with me. When I met this boy I just couldn't believe his amazingly sweet personality even with the shape that he was in. I knew after meeting him he had to come to Canada. Wall-E has a broken pelvis and a dislocated leg. This injury is old, at least 6-7 weeks. He was probably hit by a car and his owner never came to find him. At this time Wall-E is fighting an upper respratory infection that he needs to kick before surgery. If all goes well he will be scheduled for surgery this Monday

Hello Ladies -

I do my best thinking when I am out for a run and this morning was no exception. I thought about August and when we adopted Louie, still....what a gift!
Louie and I went for our usual beach run this morning and I found myself smiling more than usual - not only because it was a nice morning, but because running with Louie was what I had been dreaming about for a very long time. We are all so very much in love with our Louie. He is so good on the leash and eager to please and has filled out nicely. Right now I am working on him coming when I ask (out in the back yard on a very long leash) and he is getting it much better than before. He sits with us just pointing our finger, lays down on command and even sometimes anticipates it and lays down before he is asked, waits like a gentleman for his food and plays with any dog that shows interest in him. He absolutely loves everyone he meets and has become a fabulous companion for my 76 and 80 year old parents who look after him during the daytime. I am still so thankful for our sweet, loving, handsome, happy boy Louie and appreciate the good work that you do to find good matches. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart!

I was also thinking of asking you if you need any more volunteers in Nanaimo to do house visits like Stephanie - I would certainly be very interested in finding out more about that!

Dexter Day 7

Hi All our Dexter Followers!

It's Day 7 and check out the difference in our boy Dexter. He has gained 3 pounds and 95% of his skin infections are healed. No more open sores for this boy, not even on his legs or feet which were very bad. He's being bathed every 2nd day to scrub away the dead skin and to help make him more comfortable. His energy is returning and he greets everyone with a wiggle. His bladder and UTI are healed enough that we are able to start house training with him. He's being such a good boy and a very good patient.

Dexter's Journey so far

January 15-Dexter made an 11 hour trek from Spokane Washington (SpokeAnimal Shelter) to Bellingham, Wa to meet the transport to take him from SpokeAnimal's care to the care of Without Borders Boxer Rescue in BC, Canada.

Once he arrived in his foster home he was bathed to remove all the old scabs and dead skin. His skin is covered with sores that are infected. He had his dinner of turkey and rice and was started on a battery of supplements both internally and externally.

January 16-Dexter's first order of business is to visit the vet who has agreed to come in on a Sunday morning (his day off) to check our sweet boy over as we realized in the light this boy was in rough shape. Dexter was diagnosed with a severe case of demodex mange (we were aware of this before hand), a grade 3 out of 5 heart murmur (which we hope may be a 2 out of 5 when he's back to being healthy), kidney infections, bladder infections and a urinary tract infection. He has secondary skin infections to most areas of his body. His legs and feet are swollen and bleeding from the open sores. His ears are open and bleeding. He is started on strong antibiotics and a mange treatment is put in place.

By afternoon he is not doing well. He is very weak and wobbly on his feet. He is unwilling to get up and is limp in our arms when we move him. Gallons of water in, gallons out. He doesn't even know he's peeing and will often pee himself lying down or stand up and just let go. We are very concerned. Although we are doing all we can Dexter just doesn't seem to have the fight.

In the evening Kerri a WBBR volunteer arrives with the honey and together we wrap the worst part of his infected body, ears, head, feet and legs.

January 17th-Dexter had a very quiet day. He was quite disconnected from the people around him. He spent the day cuddling with his foster sister. He had little appetite and was urinating constantly.

January 18th-Today's the day Dexter has decided to fight along with us. The spirit has returned to his big brown eyes and he's got some spunk there to prove it. I walked in at lunch time and there was Dexter standing his crate looking at me. As I looked back he started barking and pawing to come out. Once out he gave a little playful dash towards one of the other dogs in the house. He stood behind me for almost an hour as I cooked up another batch of his home cooking and ate an entire helping without thinking twice about it. He enjoyed his bath licking every part of himself as the water flowed over him. The New Dexter has arrived and now we are ready to go!

Mange - Demodectic in Dogs

Mange is a parasitic skin disease caused by microscopic mites.

What causes demodectic mange?

Demodectic mange, sometimes just called "demodex" or "red mange", is the most common form of mange in dogs. It is caused by the Demodex canis, a parasite that lives in the hair follicles of dogs. Under the microscope, this mite is shaped like a cigar with eight legs.

"As long as the body's immune system is functioning properly, these mites cause no harm. "

All normal dogs (and many humans) have a few of these mites on their skin. As long as the body's immune system is functioning properly, these mites cause no harm.

Demodectic mange most often occurs when a dog has an immature immune system, allowing the number of skin mites to increase rapidly. As a result, this disease occurs primarily in dogs less than twelve to eighteen months of age. As the dog matures, its immune system also matures.

Is demodectic mange contagious?

"Demodectic mange is not contagious to other animals or humans."

No, demodectic mange is not contagious to other animals or humans. Demodex mites are transmitted to puppies from their mother during the first few days of life. Since the mite is found on virtually all dogs, exposure of a normal dog to one with demodectic mange is not dangerous.

What does demodectic mange do to the dog?

Surprisingly, a dog with demodectic mange usually does not itch severely, even though it loses hair in patches. The hair loss usually begins on the face, especially around the eyes. When there are only a few patches of hair loss, the condition is called localized demodectic mange. If the disease spreads to many areas of the skin, it becomes generalized demodectic mange.

Manuka Honey, one of our new treatments for infections

We are using Mauka Honey to help treat some of the severe secondary infections on Dexter.

Some people may find it hard to conceptualize the use of honey for medical purposes. However, the truth is, many years ago, before the advent of antibiotics and what we consider to be modern medicine, many cultures used honey for medicinal purposes. When antibiotics were invented, doctors were under the misconception that they were better than honey. New case studies are starting to prove otherwise. There are many different types of honey with varying antibacterial levels. Researchers have found that the most potent type of honey is one that comes from New Zealand called Manuka Honey. The differences in honey is predicated on the floral source, meaning the nectar of the flower that the honeybees use when manufacturing the honey. Manuka Honey is produced when bees use nectar from the flowers that grow on the Manuka bush which is native to New Zealand and certain parts of Australia. Manuka Honey has proven to be extremely effective in the treatment of wounds.

Manuka Honey provides a moist healing environment and prevents bacterial growth even when wounds are badly infected. Doctors are now using dressings with Manuka Honey to quickly sterilize wounds without the side effects of antibiotics. An added bonus to using wound products containing Manuka Honey is that it is effective against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria such as MRSA. Manuka Honey's antibacterial properties and its viscosity also provide a barrier, preventing cross-infection of wounds. Because of the existence of glucose for leucocytes in Manuka Honey, hydrogen peroxide is produced which is a known antiseptic. The acidity of Manuka Honey also adds to the antibacterial action of macrophages. The acidification of wounds promotes healing. The high glucose levels in Manuka Honey is used by the bacteria instead of amino acids from the serum and dead cells which increases lactic acid instead of ammonia and the amines and sulphur compounds that are the cause of malodor in wounds. Because of this, Manuka Honey can actually help wounds smell better.

Clinical studies have shown that Manuka Honey increases the growth of new tissue. It also reduces inflammation, the exudation of wound fluids and malodor in wounds. Its anti-inflammatory effect on wound tissues plays a big role in reducing pain. Manuka Honey has a nutrient effect on regenerating tissue because it contains amino acids, vitamins and different types of sugar. By osmosis, Manuka Honey causes an outflow of lymph which provides nutrition for regenerating tissue. The healing process can take longer if the circulation to the affected area is poor or if the person is poorly nourished. Manuka Honey also increases oxygenation of tissues which is important to the healing process.

When the Manuka Honey draws fluid away from the wound, it also lifts dirt from the wound bed. This makes surgical debridement unnecessary. Dog Parks - Are they suited for your dog?

Seems that this is a common dilemma amongst dog owners. Is the dog park a good place for my dog or not? WBBR doesn't recommend you take your dog off leash until you have 110% recall of your dog. This means that you can call your dog back no matter what types of distractions are around. These distractions would include things like squirrels, kids, cats, and yes other dogs.

Not every dog is suitable for a dog park. Much like people, not every person enjoys skydiving. I personally am not a fan of off leash dog parks. I suppose that when you have a large yard and 4 dogs of your own its pretty much an off leash dog park in itself:) lol Now saying that, when we only had Luke we went to the dog park everyday and sometimes 3 times a day! He had a great time. But there was always one or two dogs there that had to ruin the fun for everyone else. And yep there was always one or two people there that had to ruin the fun for me too. You get the picture!

We always talk about the first few weeks with your new rescue dog and what things you should and shouldn't do. And how you should keep things relatively quiet until the new dog has fully transitioned into their new home. But a lot of people don't realize that they need to always be aware of things even after they have had the dog for a while and they think the dog has fully adjusted. Training a dog doesn't stop after a while. Its constant and consistent.

They range in size and design but all share the same purpose: to provide a place where dogs can run freely off-leash and socialize with other dogs. Although they’re not for everyone, dog parks can benefit both people and their pets. Read on to find out if a trip to the dog park is right for you and your dog as well as what to do before you visit and once you’re there.

To Go or Not to Go

Benefits

Many behavior problems in dogs are caused by a lack of physical and mental activity. Dogs were born to lead active lives. They’ve worked alongside people for thousands of years, hunting game, herding and protecting livestock, and controlling vermin. Dogs’ wild relatives lead busy lives, too. Their days are full of hunting, scavenging, avoiding predators and complex social interaction. Most pet dogs, on the other hand, spend the majority of their time alone at home, napping on couches and eating food from bowls-no hunting or scavenging required. Many become bored, lonely and overweight. They have excess energy and no way to expend it, so it’s not surprising that they often come up with activities on their own, like unstuffing couches, raiding trash cans and gnawing on shoes.

To keep your dog happy, healthy and out of trouble, you’ll need to find ways to exercise her brain and body. If she enjoys the company of her own kind, visits to your local dog park can greatly enrich her life. Benefits of going to the dog park include:

• Physical and mental exercise for dogs Your dog can zoom around off-leash to her heart’s content, investigate new smells, wrestle with her dog buddies and fetch toys until she happily collapses. Many dogs are so mentally and physically exhausted by a trip to the dog park that they snooze for hours afterwards.

• Opportunities to maintain social skills Dogs are like us, highly social animals, and many enjoy spending time with their own species. At the dog park, your dog gets practice reading a variety of other dogs’ body language and using her own communication skills, and she gets used to meeting unfamiliar dogs on a frequent basis. These valuable experiences can help guard against the development of fear and aggression problems around other dogs.

• Fun for pet parents Dogs aren’t the only ones who enjoy dog parks. People do, too. They can exercise their dogs without much effort, socialize with other dog lovers, bond and play with their dogs, practice their off-leash training skills, and enjoy the entertaining antics of frolicking dogs.

Dog Park Downsides

Despite the many benefits dog parks provide, it’s important to be aware of the risks before you decide to become a dog-park devotee:

• Health risks Healthy, vaccinated dogs are at low risk of becoming ill as a result of visiting the dog park. There are health risks any time your dog interacts with other dogs, just as there are for us when we interact with other people. Talk to your veterinarian about the risks and whether she recommends vaccinating for Bordatella (“kennel cough”) if you become a regular park user. Fleas are everywhere-including on squirrels, rabbits and raccoons-so the key to flea control is providing adequate protection on your pet. Your dog could get injured in a fight or during overly rambunctious play. It’s highly unlikely, but small dogs could even be killed at a dog park because larger dogs sometimes perceive smaller dogs as prey.

• Dog problems For some dogs, especially those who are naturally shy or easily overwhelmed, a visit to the dog park can be stressful. If your dog has unpleasant experiences with other dogs-if they bully or fight with her, intimidate her or just play too roughly-she might decide she doesn’t like them at all! She could start growling, barking, snarling, snapping and lunging to drive other dogs away, and even biting if they approach.

• People problems Everyone has a different perspective, and some people have strong opinions about dog behavior. Pet parents don’t always agree about what’s normal dog behavior, what’s acceptable during play, what kind of behavior is truly aggressive, which dog behaviors are obnoxious, whether or not one dog is bullying another or who’s at fault in an altercation. People might argue about how to respond when problems between dogs arise. Since there’s rarely an authority figure to appeal to at a dog park, disagreements can get heated and result in human behavior problems!

Is the Dog Park Right for You and Your Dog?

Many people feel that the benefits of dog parks outweigh their risks. Others decide that they’re not comfortable going to dog parks. To make the best decision for you and your dog, consider the pros and cons above, read the guidelines below, and visit local dog parks without your dog just to watch and learn more.

Who Benefits Most?

• Well-socialized dogs Dog parks are best for dogs who love interacting with other dogs. They’re not for dogs who simply tolerate other dogs, dogs who only get along with certain types of dogs or dogs who routinely fight with other dogs.

• Young dogs Although adult dogs can have fun at dog parks, young dogs (under the age of two) benefit most. They can burn some of their youthful energy and gain valuable social experience with other dogs and people. Younger dogs are also more likely to enjoy multiple playmates than older dogs, who often get more picky about their friends as they mature.

• Healthy dogs To be well protected at the dog park, your dog should be fully vaccinated and have a good immune system. Since dogs do a lot of wrestling and running at the park, your dog should also be physically sound and free of chronic injuries or pain. Ask your veterinarian about your dog’s health-readiness for going to dog parks.

• Altered dogs To avoid unwanted sexual behavior at the dog park, it’s best to spay or neuter your dog before visiting the dog park.

Who’s Not an Ideal Candidate?

• Unvaccinated puppies It’s essential for young puppies to meet and interact with a variety of different dogs during their socialization period, from about 3 to 16 weeks of age. (For more information, please see our article, Socializing Your Puppy.) However, before they’ve been fully vaccinated, puppies are extremely vulnerable to potentially deadly contagious diseases, such as parvovirus. Because so many dogs frequent a dog park, the chances of exposure to dangerous pathogens are higher there. Until your puppy has had all her shots, don’t take her to the dog park. Instead, you can arrange play dates at the homes of friends and family who have healthy dogs and puppies. You can also enroll your puppy in a puppy class that includes off-leash playtime in a safe, hygienic area.

• Females in heat and unneutered males To avoid unwanted pregnancies, don’t take an unspayed female dog to the park when she’s in heat. Avoid taking an unneutered male to the dog park as well. In addition to siring accidental puppies, intact males can experience social problems. An unneutered dog’s high testosterone level can make him the target of harassment or aggression from other male dogs.

• Undersocialized, fearful, anxious or aggressive dogs Many people mistakenly believe that dogs who fear or dislike other dogs just need more socialization. However, if your dog is fearful or nervous around other dogs, exposing her to the hectic environment of a dog park will only worsen her problems. Similarly, if your dog is aggressive toward other dogs, visits to a dog park might exacerbate her behavior and put other people’s pets at risk or ruin their enjoyment of the park. • Bullies Some dogs, because of their personalities or learning experiences, just don’t play well with others. Dogs who bully can traumatize their weaker or more timid playmates or provoke fights. If bullies are allowed to practice their behavior at the dog park, their behavior often worsens over time-and bad experiences with bullies can cause aggression problems in other dogs.

• Dog dorks Some dogs don’t bully other dogs on purpose, but they lack more refined social skills and just aren’t capable of playing politely. Despite their good intentions, they seem socially clueless. They’re usually high-energy dogs who enjoy play with lively wrestling, hard mouthing and crashing into other dogs like canine bumper cars. When their playmates dislike the rough treatment and try to communicate their desire to quit playing, these dogs don’t seem to understand. They can also hurt or upset people at the dog park if they jump up and mouth on hands, arms or legs. Because rough players can easily spoil the fun for other dogs and their people, they’re not good candidates for dog parks either.

Before You Go

Choosing a Park

There are all kinds of dog parks. Some are situated in open areas, some include walking trails through the woods, and some are located at beaches or near lakes. Some are enclosed by fences and others aren’t. Some parks are formal-recognized by a city or county, with rules created and enforced by a board or committee. Others are just areas where people gather informally to let their dogs play.

Ideal Dog Park Features

Though they vary in design and terrain, the best dog parks should have a few ideal features:

• Enough space for normal interaction The area should be big enough for dogs to run around and space themselves out. If there’s not enough square footage available, a park can easily get crowded. Crowding can lead to tension among dogs and, as a result, fights can erupt.

• Secure fencing and gates Even if your dog reliably comes when called, it’s safest to take her to a securely enclosed area to play off leash. Before you let your dog run free at a dog park, make sure that fencing is sturdy and free of holes. It’s also best if the park enclosure incorporates double gates or an interior “holding pen” at the entrance, so people and their dogs can enter and exit without accidentally letting other dogs slip out of the park.

• Clean-up stations A dog park should have trash cans and bags available for people to clean up after their dogs.

• Water and shelter Especially in warmer climates, exercising dogs should have access to both drinking water and shade.

• A separate area for small dogs Small dogs need exercise and play time too, but they can sometimes get injured or frightened by larger dogs. Many dog parks designate separate areas for smaller or younger dogs so that they can play safely.

Preview the Park and Prepare

Go Alone and Observe

It’s important to visit the dog park a few times without your dog, just to check it out in advance.

• Note the park features. Are you comfortable with them? Do they meet your needs? Also read any posted rules and make sure you agree with them. Can you bring treats and toys with you? Does your dog need a special license? Do you need to pay a fee to use the dog park?

• Go to the park at different times, on different days. Note the best days and times of day to visit. If the park’s always packed on weekend mornings or weekdays after work, for example, you can take your dog at off-peak hours instead.

• Observe the park-goers. Are people actively supervising their dogs or are they letting them run amok while they chat and sip lattés? Does anyone in particular seem to have trouble effectively controlling his or her dog? Are there specific dogs who consistently play too roughly or fight with other dogs? If you identify people or dogs who seem to cause problems, you can avoid visiting the park when they’re around.

Prepare in Advance

• Think about what you’ll need to bring. Find some comfortable clothes and shoes to wear. Put together a dog-park kit that includes essentials, like a leash, water for you and your dog, bags for clean-up, toys and treats.

• Teaching your dog a few key skills helps keep her safe and contributes to a more enjoyable dog-park experience for all park users. One essential skill is a reliable recall. Please see our article, Teaching Your Dog to Come When Called. Sit, down, stay, drop it, leave it and settle are also very useful. • It will help to train yourself, too. Learning about canine body language and communication will help you interpret what’s going on during play and prevent conflict before it escalates to a fight. Please see our article, Canine Body Language, for illustrations and information about how dogs communicate.

When You Get There

General Guidelines

Keep the following recommendations in mind to minimize your risks and maximize your fun:

• Before you enter the park, check out the crowd for a few minutes. Do the dogs seem to be romping happily? If so, let the fun begin! If, on the other hand, you notice canine troublemakers bullying or fighting with other dogs-or if you simply feel uneasy about letting your dog play with a particular group of dogs-plan to come back at a later time.

• When a new dog arrives at a dog park, the other dogs often rush over to investigate. This sudden flood of attention can overwhelm newcomers. To avoid a canine mob scene, linger outside the park for a few minutes and let other dogs notice your dog’s presence outside the park’s enclosure. When their excitement about her arrival dissipates, you can enter the park together. After your dog has played a while and become part of the group inside the park, don’t let her become a mob member. Instead, call her to you when you notice newcomers arriving.

• Keep your attention on your dog and her playmates so that you’re aware of what she’s doing at all times. If you see signs that play’s not going well, you can step in to stop interaction before things get out of hand. (Please see Interpreting Dog Play and Interaction, below, to learn about these signs.)

• Avoid canine clumping. When a pair or group of dogs plays nonstop for more than a few minutes, playmates can get overexcited and tension can arise. Instead of standing in one spot during your entire visit, move to a new area of the park every few minutes. Encourage your dog to follow you when you walk to a new spot. Praise and reward her for keeping track of where you are and for coming when you call.

• If at any point you think your dog might not be having fun, take her home. If she’s interacting with another dog, don’t hesitate to ask that dog’s pet parent to help you end the play session. It’s better to call it quits early so your dog still has a good experience overall. You don’t want her to decide that she doesn’t enjoy playing with other dogs anymore.

Interpreting Dog Play and Interaction

While you’re at the dog park with your dog, it’s important to closely monitor interaction between playmates. But interpretation can be difficult sometimes. What do dogs look like when they’re friendly with each other? How about when they don’t feel so friendly? What constitutes polite play between dogs? How can you tell when playmates aren’t getting along, and how do you know when it’s time to intervene? The information below should help you interpret and evaluate dog play. When You Get There continued...

What Good Play Looks Like

When dogs play, they often play-bow, paw at each other and bounce around like puppies. Their bodies look relaxed, rather than stiff, and they might make “play faces”-they hold their mouths open and look like they’re smiling. During play, the dogs might growl playfully and open their mouths wide, exposing their teeth and pretending to be ferocious. They might switch roles so that one dog’s sometimes on top when wrestling and sometimes on her back, sometimes chasing and sometimes being chased, sometimes pouncing and sometimes getting pounced on. The dogs might also frequently switch games, alternating between stalking and chasing each other, wrestling and rolling around on the ground, mouthing on each other, playing with toys, and taking breaks to drink water or sniff around. As the dogs run and wrestle, you might notice them pausing or freezing frequently for just a second or two before launching back into the game. These little pauses and breaks in play help ensure that play doesn’t get out of hand.

Signs of Trouble

If possible, watch for warning signs and step in before a fight happens. Your first clue that things aren’t going well during play might be the absence of all the signs of polite play described above. Instead of those signs, you might notice the dogs’ bodies becoming stiffer and more tense. Their movements might seem faster and less bouncy. Play might become louder and build in intensity, without any breaks or pauses. If you see any of these signs, it’s time to separate the playmates. You should also interrupt play if you see a dog who’s pursuing and playing too roughly with a playmate who’s trying to get away, or who’s repeatedly knocking down or standing over another dog. Intervene immediately if a number of dogs start to chase a single dog-especially if that dog is small.

Damage Control: If There’s a Fight

Sometimes, despite your best efforts to monitor playtime, dogs get into fights. These scuffles often look and sound ferocious. The dogs might growl fiercely, snarl at each other, bark, snap and show their teeth. However, most dog fights don’t result in injury to either dog. They’re usually the equivalent of getting into a brief, heated argument with a friend or family member. Even so, if a fight lasts more than a few seconds, the dogs’ pet parents should separate them. Doing this can be dangerous. If you grab a dog who’s in the middle of fighting with another dog, she might startle and reflexively whip around to bite you. To reduce the likelihood of injury to all parties, follow these guidelines:

• Prevent fights from happening in the first place by actively watching dogs during play. If you think things are starting to look a little tense, end play for a while by calling your dog to come to you. (Please see our article, Teaching Your Dog to Come When Called.)

• Have a plan and don’t panic. Remember that most dog fights are noisy but harmless. If you stay calm, you’ll be able to separate two fighting dogs more safely and efficiently.

• Before you try physically separating two fighting dogs, make lots of noise. Clap and yell. Consider carrying a mini-air horn or two metal pie pans to bang together. A sudden loud sound will often interrupt a fight.

• If there’s a hose handy, you can try spraying the dogs with water.

• If you’ve tried briefly (3 seconds or so) making noise but the dogs are still fighting, you and the other dog’s pet parent should approach the dogs together. Separate them at the same time. Both of you should take hold of your dogs’ back legs at the very top just under the hips, right where the legs connect to the body. (Avoid grabbing the dogs lower on their legs, like by their knees, ankles or paws. Doing so could cause them serious injury.) Like you’d lift a wheelbarrow, lift your dog’s back end under his hips so that his back legs come off of the ground, and move backwards away from the other dog. As soon as you can, turn your dog away from the other dog.

• DO NOT grab your dog by the collar. It seems like the natural thing to do, but it might startle your dog and cause her to turn and bite you. This kind of bite is like a reflex that’s done without thinking. Many pet parents get bitten this way-even when their dogs haven’t shown any signs of aggression in the past.

• After a fight stops, put both dogs on leashes and end the play session. Avoid giving the dogs another chance to fight. If the dog park is large enough, you can walk your dog to another area, far away from the dog she squabbled with. After she’s calmed down and relaxed again, try letting her off leash again to play with other dogs. If the park’s not that big, just call it quits for the day.

Tips from our Trainer to prepare for your new baby

Congratulations you just found out your expecting a new bundle of joy! What exciting news, a new addition to the family!

Wait....don't forget about Rufus. How do you think the furry family member will take to the new baby? Let's find out.....now is the best time to make those changes that you want to make. Here are some tips that will help make the transition easier.

Change any rules now that you want to change when baby arrives (ie they are allowed on the couches now but when baby comes I don't want them up.). If the rules are well in place before baby then it's not baby that has caused these new rules.

Go to Walmart and buy that $20 super annoying crying baby doll and carry it around the house. The dogs may be ubber interested but better to get them accustomed to it now rather the later. Put crying/giggle baby in the swing, the high chair etc.

Set the swing in motion this alone can scare them. Get them used to that motion as they may want to smell it etc and it will bonk them and bang them and the swing will stop etc.

Go for silly walks with the dogs and stroller. Often dogs are scared of the stroller so to get them used to walking beside/with it before you are juggling baby too.

Boxers are great with kids and will love the new baby. You will find that your Boxer will be best of friends with his new brother/sister. However the sooner you start implementing the new rules the better! Good luck and all the best with the new bundle of joy!

A Happy New Year for Lucy - Adopted August 2010

Lucy is doing fantastic. She is unbelievable as she has the best disposition of any dog I have ever seen. She is full of love and kisses but at the same time when you go for a walk she also makes you feel real safe. She is about 70 pounds now and is very powerful. Thank you guys for finding Rudy (aka Major) a good home; he really is a good boy. It was really hard for us to watch him go, thankfully we took some photos. Even though we still have our two boxers, it is very quite without him!

I've been reading your blog posts about adopting senior dogs & as you guys know we adopted our first foster, a senior named Bubba. It took a couple of days for his personality to come through as he had just gone through several surgeries when we got him. I have to say we were really impressed with him from the get go. He knows his commands complete with hand signals, he is house trained, good with the cat & just fits in as though he has been here all along; it is hard to believe someone gave him up. Our minds were pretty much made up the first week we had him that we would keep him. What better feeling than to know that your improving a seniors quality of life & that they know home, safety & love. We will for sure adopt a another senior in the future. Thank you guys - keep up the good work!

Adopting a Senior Dog

There seems to be a lot of misconceptions about rescue dogs and in particular about senior rescue dogs. Ok let’s start from the beginning. First, let’s address the reasons why dogs end up in rescue.

Some people feel that if you adopt a dog from a rescue, you would be inheriting someone else’s problems. Dogs lose their homes for a number of different reasons. Most of them are not problems that the dog has, but are problems that the people have. Not all dogs in rescue have behavioural or health issues. We live in a very fast society. When people want things they want them right away. It is quite common for a very expensive, well-bred dog to outlive their usefulness, especially when people buy them on an impulse without doing any research. Or the people no longer want to take responsibility for them. Other reasons can include things like death or illness of an owner, not enough time, change in schedule, new baby, loss of a home, allergies, or change of lifestyle. These are just a few reasons, as you can see.

Too many times, our hearts are broken because we have several great seniors that are so often overlooked for adoptions.

Why would you adopt a senior dog?

Senior dogs have had some training in obedience or house manners. Although some dogs while being in the shelter get confused and scared of being uprooted from their regular lives and may forget all that they have learnt. However, once in a new home they soon remember with a refresher course and some gentle reminders. Senior dogs are no longer going thru the puppy stage and chewing everything in sight. Yes that includes your shoes, furniture, cell phones, carpets, and walls (and it doesn’t stop there!) They understand to stay off furniture, and not to chew, and were at one point socialized in their lives to get along with humans, other dogs and pets. Another great thing is; there are no surprises. You know how big the dog is going to be as they are no longer puppies and have stopped growing! Senior dogs are grateful that you have adopted them and they are always thankful. They appreciate love and attention and are quick learners. Yes! They are quick learners. You can definitely teach an old dog new tricks! They know what is expected of them and will openly give their love to you.

Another misconception that people have about senior dogs is that their vet bills and health issues are more than that of a younger dog. Let’s face it vet care and medication is needed at any age. It may or may not be more for an older dog. Age really is just a number. Older dogs need all the same things that younger dogs do. They need good nutrition, exercise (although may be less intense and physical), regular trips to the vet, love and attention.

I have met many people who want puppies. I personally would prefer to adopt a senior dog, myself. By adopting a senior you are making a strong statement about compassion and the value of all life at any age. You are setting a wonderful example for your children and giving them life lessons that will be forever valuable. Yes a puppy has her whole life ahead of her, but so does a senior dog. You can give that senior dog the best years of his life.

My friend, who recently let go of their senior gal, told me that she had a hard time coming to terms with adopting another senior so soon after the passing of her dog. After some thought, she decided to go ahead and adopt another senior. She felt that giving a home to another senior in need was a tribute to her old gal and it actually helped to ease her pain. Saving a dog from euthanization allows for them to have quality time for whatever period they have left. It allows us to focus on the positives and to deal better with our loss.

There are no guarantees about length of life with any dog. Quality of time together is what matters more than quantity. Please consider adopting a senior today. It truly is one of the most rewarding experiences.

Zephyr (aka Zeffie) a happy ending for a beautiful girl!

I know many of you remember sweet Zephyr. Everyone wanted to meet her as she
had such a lovely personality. But she was a little older, she was very
chewed up and looked to have walked a hard road in her life. But she was
always quick to give kisses and loved everyone.

She went home with Chantelle to Vancouver where their vet examined her leg
which looked like a shark had gnawed on it. Along with many bite scars, a
ripped ear, torn eyelid the vet discovered an imbedded canine tooth in her
chewed up leg bone. Yes, this sweetheart had been used as a bait dog for
fighters.

Well look at her now. She went home with a wonderful family in the North and
loves the snow. She is flying, free and absolutely adored.

Hi Jen, Kerri, Sherri and Chantelle,

Well, its been 6 months that Carley and I have been together now, and I can’t begin to tell you how much she has enriched my life. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect dog, she is all I could have asked for. The only time I am not with her is when I am at work, and the rest of the time, we are always on the go. She loves going to the dog park and if we can’t make it there, we always do our long neighbourhood walk. When I take her to the Island, she loves the trails and the beach. She travels well, usually just lying down in the back seat, and when we are on the ferry, she loves all the attention from her many admirers. ;p I have to admit, she has been spoiled a bit… ok, lots, but I love seeing her little butt wiggle while doing the “kidney bean”!

I have attached a few recent photos for you as I have a zillion of them! Again, thank you all very much for everything you do, and if there is ever anything I can do to help out, please let me know, it would be my pleasure. I have “unofficially” made Carley a WBBR ambassador!

I can't believe how the time flies and its another year over again. WBBR is especially thankful to everyone who volunteers, donates and supports us all throughout the year. We have helped a number of dogs in need and we wouldn't be able to do this without your continued support. WBBR is very proud of all our volunteers and the tremendous amount of effort and team work that has been shown by everyone. Thank you to for your dedication and love to this worthy cause.

This year we experienced many successes, including the Pub Night Fundraiser and the launch of our new website, to name a few. We have met many new friends along the way but yet we have had to say goodbye to some old friends too. They say that some people come into our lives and pass quickly, while others come into your lives and no matter how long they stay, the leave footprints on our hearts. For this we are eternally grateful and will always remember them forever, as they will always live on as long as we keep their memory in our hearts.

We at WBBR wish everyone a very wonderful Holiday Season and all the best of Boxer loves and snuggles to everyone in the new year! We look forward to even more successes in 2011 with our WBBR family.

A Rescue Dog's Christmas Poem
Based on the epithet that: "A dog is not just for Christmas".

'Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
every shelter is full - we are lost but not found,
Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
we hope every minute that someone will care,
They'll come to adopt us and give us the call,
"Come here, Max and Sparkie - come fetch your new ball!!"

But now we sit here and think of the days...
we were treated so fondly - we had cute, baby ways,
Once we were little, then we grew and we grew -
now we're no longer young and we're no longer new.
So out the back door we were thrown like the trash,
they reacted so quickly - why were they so rash?

We "jump on the children", "don't come when they call",
we "bark when they leave us", "climb over the wall".
We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
now we suffer the consequence of the errors they made.
If only they'd trained us, if only we knew...
we'd have done what they asked us and worshiped them, too.

We were left in the backyard, or worse - let to roam -
now we're tired and lonely and out of a home.
They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-bye...
"Maybe someone else will give you a try."
So now here we are, all confused and alone...
in a shelter with others who long for a home.

The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat,
with so many to care for, they can't stay to chat,

I am so excited to announce that the Calendar Contest is underway. I am also just as thrilled to let you all know that WBBR officially has a new website!!!

Thank you everyone who submitted their photos for our Calendar Contest. All the pictures were lovely and all our dogs are so amazing. We were overwhelmed with several beautiful pictures of WBBR Boxers and choosing the top 30 was very difficult. We would have loved to use everybody’s pictures but there unfortunately just isn’t enough space:( The pictures that made it thru the first round have all been posted on WBBR’s brand new website!

2010 has been shaping up to be an amazing year for WBBR. We would like to celebrate our success by compiling a 2011 WBBR calendar! We are beyond excited for this new project because it means that all our adopters also get to help us with it. We all know what a great team WBBR is and also how great our adoptive families are. What a terrific way to incorporate some great teamwork!

What this means for you?

If you have a favourite picture of your adorable Boxer that you adopted from WBBR, please submit it. There is only a limited amount of space for the calendar, so a contest will be held to decide which pictures will be in the new calendar. WBBR will narrow it down from the submissions and then I will post them on the Facebook group for everyone to vote!

Don’t let the ghosts, ghouls and goblins get to your pet this Halloween.

“While Halloween is fun for trick-or-treaters, it can be a scary and dangerous time for both pets and farm animals,” says Lorie Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the BC SPCA.

Loud noises in the neighbourhood, constant door-knocking and fireworks outside may spook companion pets, causing them to dart into traffic or even jump through windows.

Frightened farm animals have even been known to run into barbed-wire fences or other obstructions.

“With a little planning, guardians can take steps to keep their pets safe on Halloween,” says Chortyk.

The BC SPCA offers these seasonal tips:

Keep pets inside
Pets who are inside have fewer opportunities to confront trick-or-treaters. Some pets do well left in a separate room with the radio or television on to mask the sound of fireworks and trick-or-treaters. Be sure to leave plenty of toys in the room for your pet so that he doesn’t think he’s being isolated as a punishment. If your pet finds the doorbell disturbing, consider disconnecting the doorbell for the night. Alternatively, you can leave a bowl of treats near the door outside where trick-or-treaters can help themselves. That way, they won’t knock or ring the doorbell – at least not until the bowl is emptied.

Identification
Make sure your pet is wearing identification. Dogs and cats may try to run away if they feel threatened. Clear, current identification is your best chance to have them returned to you

Don’t console your anxious pet
While it is natural to want to comfort your pet, it is better to use a bright, cheerful voice to send a message that things are fine. Avoid saying things like, “it’s OK” or “don’t be scared” in a soft or sympathetic voice. This only reinforces your pet’s fearful behaviour.

Candy is for people
Candy can lead to health problems such as diabetes or obesity, and chocolate is especially dangerous because it contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and cats. Keep treats well away from your pets.

Leave home without them
If you think it would be fun to bring your pet trick-or-treating, your pet may not share your view. The strange sights and sounds of Halloween can cause a normally friendly dog to bite if it feels scared or threatened.

Keep away from costumes for your pet
Dressing your dog in a costume inhibits his ability to communicate, making him prone to display aggression himself or be subjected to aggressive behaviour from other dogs.

Dulce is home & doing well

Hi Jennifer,
It's funny that you emailed today, as I was just writing an update for everyone.

A big thank you everyone who made it possible for Dulce to join our family
Her name suites her to a T as she is a really sweet girl.
Its been 2 weeks since we brought Dulce home so I thought I would give an update and send a couple of pics.

First off her tummy only has 2 sores left on it ,one is taking longer to heal as she will get at in the night sometimes( she has learned how to take off her shirts).
Her seperation anxiaty is getting better she will cry a bit when someone first leaves the house (as she is standing at door whining because Rick is outside while I’m typing this) and will sometimes run around in a panic when she realizes you left the room but she will settle down now.

We have gotten the growl/cower by me when people come in the house nipped in butt. Thanks Jennifer and Sheri for helping me out I really appreciated how you took the time to respond and give me advise. She is not a fan of the crate, would rather look out the window from the couch so we are letting her do that while still trying to get her to like the crate.

Dulce can be shy with meeting people and gets startled easily by certain noises and movements especially around her head, but she is always gentle.
She loves her walks, is really good with meeting dogs . She only has gotten Alpha a couple of times. We have ran into bears , deer’s, rabbits cats etc she is so well behaved it’s a dream. Her and the cat are making friends ( cat is being a bit of a turd) and we have being taking her out to friends and family to socialize and she is a good girl.

Dulce is a talking, snuggling, sniffing , snoring , very messy eater, gas machine, (we are working on the food situation still) , and can give the stubborn boxer look to you like nobody’s business , all those great boxer things we have missed around the house in the last few months.

Our Baby Boba/Boston Finds a New Home & A New Sister

Hi Jen,

as we told you here are some pictures of our baby. We call him Boston or shorter Bos and he responds to the name greatly. You can see on the pictures that he is already picking up on Zara's good energy and he is calm,not running around in our apartment. They share all their toys and bones and eat their meals 20cm apart.
Boston sleeps in his crate (with closed door,for now) in my bedroom and he doesn't mind it. Last night we were pretty much tired,went to sleep at 9 pm and woke up at 8.15am.Yesterday morning he was a bit distancing from us but this morning he was overwhelmed to see us BUT not jumping. He even goes nicely on the leash,only when he sees something really interesting to him then he gets excited and jumpy.
I think we couldn't get a better dog than him and as you told he IS so smart,once told "leave it " he turns his head away and goes away from it. We will keep you posted about Boston's improvement.

A Big Paws Up for One of WBBR's Hardworking Families (Bella)

Hey Chantelle,

It has been a well since I sent you an update on Bella, she is doing well but we are still working on Bella time which is to be expected. She struggles with social skills with other dogs when out (I think this is more to do with being overwhelmed in the outside world) and still guards our home in Bella style but is easing up on who and what she barks at! She is super funny! She doesn't quite lose it when she sees a cat or squirrel like she used. She sleeps on her bed on the floor in my room at night (baby gate on the bedroom door) and is kennelled only when I'm away. We started dog obedience last week and she spent the whole first class watching from behind a screen, she can do everything we learn in class at home without batting an eye and off lead but class is very overwhelming for her right now. This obedience training is reward based and not dominance based so she loves the rewards and will do really well once she feels comfortable, the trainer and assistant both have tons of experience with rescue dogs and are very supportive. It is a new concept in training for me and we are both learning together. I had my back yard fenced yesterday so that she has a safe place to run and play and that should help with her pent up energy as well. People are scared to death of her when we are out on our daily walks but she usually trots right past them, she does have a thing about old men with hats which is interesting. She is a work in progress and while frustrating at times so rewarding to see her emerge so ever slowing into the girl she was meant to be.

Hello Chantelle and everyone at WBBR!!

Just a little note to let you know that Sasha is doing wonderful! Her birthday was yesterday and she celebrated by eating half a tub of margarine that I had left out on the counter, whoops! haha. What a stinker.

She loves everyone she meets, but is having some trouble with other dogs, so we are working on that. We want her to be able to go to the dog park and run and play! She sleeps in between us every night on the bed, and she hasn't had an accident in weeks. We are so proud!

I rescued a human today

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY by Janine Allen

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

A heartwarming update from our Medical boy Winston

A very sweet update from a special little man, Winston (formerly Neuro) had some neurological deficates from either trauma or ingestion. He got lots of help and lots of therapy and now he has the best medicine ever...a wonderful family. Winston is doing fantastic and is very, very loved. Here he is in a rare moment where he is still as this little guy is a whirl wind of playful energy. He is very loved.

Check out the tongue one (omg!) which I took before we left Bellingham Saturday afternoon, and two cuddle shots (one with our daughter). I wish there was a good way to capture the action shots with Winston and Sampson because those are the ones that will give you tears from laughing. Funniest thing ever - they grab each others hind legs and then spin in circles in sort of a "you let go first / no YOU let go first" game. And then when we say their names, they stop moving but don't let go of each others' legs... it's a hoot.

We've shot a bunch of video, someday I'll figure out how to post to Youtube. And the playing is sweeeeeet... nipping at each others' ears and jowls, Winston launching himself from the couch ("Wheeeee!") to land on Sampson who loves it and then when it's time, he puts his arm around Winston like, "Okay now, that's enough little dude."

And one more thing - yesterday it was time for our cat to explain his place to Winston, so there was a little hissing and Sampson (who loves our cat) went into total protection mode on Winston's side. Got right between them and just waited for the cat to do something, you could tell he was ready to intervene and protect his new little brother. Didn't have to, because our cat's not like that, he just made his statement and walked away, but Sammy was right there, and ready. We hadn't seen that before, it was pretty cool.

Anyway, that's it for the update. If you or Chantelle are ever down here and want to visit Winston and see how he's doing, you should give us a call. We'd be happy to have you over or meet up somewhere!

Louie Louie - What a cute boy!

Good Morning -

I just thought I'd give another update now that it's been almost 4wks since we adopted Louie...

First off - what a FABULOUSLY AMAZING boy we have! He has settled in great with us and is really showing us that he wants to be a part of our family by his good listening skill and wanting to please us by doing most things that are asked of him. He goes in and out of his "house" (crate) without hesitation and knows that we always come back to let him out. He greets other dogs on our walks by slowing down and waiting for them to come to him first. We thought this was best as we were not sure what to expect from the other dogs or him. Everybody that sees him can't help falling in love with him and they all say "what a good looking dog he is" - we agree! He likes the little breeds as they seem more ready to play, but is also comfortable with the larger breeds. He is faster than lightening when he is off leash in the dog park...I took him there last week when there wasn't too many dogs so I could see how he would react. Man...he is quick! He behaved himself again like a true gentleman and loved the experience but did not love the rain - he was soaking wet and wanted to get back into the truck to dry off. Although the dog park is not really my thing, I will take him once in a while. He is learning come and stay while off leash in the house and is really getting the hang of it. He does great on our runs that I keep to about 30 mins so that he will always enjoy this experience and not feel like it is a chore. He is delightfully laid back, happy and cool as a cucumber. We know without a doubt that Louie was meant to be part of our family. Thanks again for such a wonderful experience!

Souli Update - Adopted Aug 2010

HI Everyone,

So they are getting along nicely now. Sam has turned into Sargeant Sam ala Luke. Souli gets excited and hops and wiggles and Sam gets right in there to stop it. He is definitely alpha. She is no longer howling when we leave but she does this weird, super quiet howl if one of us is home and the other leaves, she starts really low with her head down adn then by the end she is staring at the ceiling still howling low but with her cheeks puffed out. Its hilarious (no i don't encourage it but its hard not to laugh).

We start training tonight with Souli bear so wish us luck. I inlcuded some pics of the kidlets :)

I am officially in love with Kady and we will be keeping her name, whoever named her picked a perfect name for her!

I got Kady home, introduced her and Thor - she is not too interested in him right now but is stuck to me like glue! I fed them and got them fresh water. She does two things I never thought a dog could do - eat faster than Thor and make a bigger mess drinking!!!! She loved the raw food. They hung out in the yard and then I took them for a bit of a walk. She walks great on a leash. Man does she have a nose on her, she was snorting her way all over the house! She does not want to be too far away from me and when I move she gets up and follows. She will settle in but for now she seems very out of sorts. I took a couple of pics, they are attached.

Maggie Mange Puppy update

I visited with Maggie today. She looks so good. Stacie and Sean absolutely love her and had nothing but things to say about her. She has been stung twice by bees but they had Benadryl and they treated her right away. They are enrolling her in puppy classes in Sept. She is so cute! Her and Guinness love each other, they play and run hard around the back yard. Her feet are still huge and she is leggy. Can't wait to see her all frown up!

Lucy and I just got home today from Kelowna. She is a wonderful dog and is going to be a fantastic dog. She is so well behaved and calm it is almost unbelievable. I can walk her without a leash and she will stay right at my side the whole way. She had a blast at my daughter's in Kelowna and I am sure she did not want to leave but she is happy to be home with her new little sister Suzi. Suzi is the happiest dog in the world having Lucy here. They play and chase each other around the yard like puppies. I will send you more pics later. Lucy is just a big loving dog, she slept on my lap in my PT crusier for the entire ferry ride to Duke Point and she just snuggles in and does not jump around as she is very gentle on the seats. Thnak you for the vaccination info today and thanks once again for finding me Lucy. She is a stunning beauty with a great personality.

Ah YES! I just took a bunch in the last few days! So funny! We are building a large fire pit area with sand and of course Owen is going crazy in it! He is active and smart and learning new commands all the time. HE and Winston get along extremely well, a great new addition!

Buddy Is Home - Adopted Aug 2010

Hi Allyson

Just wanted to let you know that Buddy is doing great and is adjusting very well. He seems to be a very quick learner and is making himself quite comfortable. He spent most of the day avoiding George, but a few miniutes ago he decided that he wanted to play too, which of course resulted in a coughing fit and now he is having some quiet time in his crate and George is trying to let him rest. We are really excited to see what happens with these two once Buddy is feeling better. I have attached a couple of pictures taken of Buddy while George was out for a walk.

Morning ladies -

SHHHHHH, don't tell my family, but I've snuck on the computer to send you all an email about my new home, family and friends. My teenagers are sleeping, mom is doing dishes and dad went to work so this is the perfect time for me to give you an update so you don't worry about me.

I guess it's been about 11 days now in my new home and I have settled in comfortably now. I was a bit nervous at first as I didn't quite know if I was staying here or if this was another foster home so I decided to stay fairly quiet, calm and listen to everything that was asked of me. After a couple of days, I figured out that I'm not going anywhere and that they love me very much, they tell me everyday and say that I am the BEST DOG EVER! I get lots of hugs, cuddles, good food, walks and have been given clear boundaries of what they expect of me. I have tried to sneak up on my teenagers beds while they are still asleep in the mornings but soon mom or dad figure out where I am and ask me to get down - I can't blame them really, I do take up a lot of space and waking a sleeping teenager is sometimes not a pretty sight. I can't help myself though as they are giving me so much love and attention that I feel I can push my boundaries a little and heck, I am only one years old! I go for walks twice a day and sometimes one of those walks is a run with my mom - she likes to feel safe with me by her side when she runs and after I sniff, pee and poop I run along side of her like the gentleman that I am and it's funny, but I feel safe when I'm with her too. We run for about 35 minutes but she tells me that she would like to work me up to about an hour, that seems like a long time to run, but she assures me that we will ease into it. My crate is called my "house" now and I sleep quietly all night in it in mom and dad's bedroom. I like to rest in my house sometimes during the day cause they bring it down to the TV room but my most favourite place to nap is in front of the sliding glass doors with the sunshine warming my back. I stretch out as long as I can and soak it all in...this is the life! I've met most of the family now and my favourites are the two little people (nieces aged 3 1/2 & 6) who think that I am the most bestiest dog ever. I let them walk me around the trees at their nana's house and listen very closely to what they want me to do. I know that I am strong enough to pull them where I want, but they are so good to me that all I want to do is to please them and keep them safe so I try super hard to follow their instructions. The oldest was asking me to stop, stay and then come as we walked so.....I did...and boy was my mom proud of me! I feel so good about my behaviour when I get praised after doing something right - can't get enough of those scratches behind my ears - love 'em. I met my new cousin who is a little white ball of fluff they call Maggie, she is a shitzusomething, I think. We met through a chain link fence as her owners felt that she may be frightened of my size - she doesn't have many friends in her neighborhood. After she finished barking at me as little dogs do, we sniffed and I wanted to play. Maggie still feels a bit overwhelmed so we will visit again with her next week and see if she is ready to play with me. I've gone to Grandma and Grandpa's house down by Piper's Lagoon as well and am quite fascinated by the 4 cats that live there. It's funny, but none of them want to play with me, in fact, one named Sloan comes after me and swats at me so I give him his space and try not to bother him. I am told that this will be my "daycare" for about 3 or 4 hours a day when everyone is at work or school. Gma and Gpa have a really big fenced back yard with lots of trees and grass for me to run and play - I think I'll like it there. Mom took me to meet the vet yesterday and she was very nice. She told mom that I am a very nice looking, gentle boxer but should put on a couple more pounds. The vet looked in my ears as I have been scratching them a bit and then put some stuff in them. The assistants cleaned my ears and gave mom some antibiotics as they think it is a yeast infection that has been there a while. It felt so good to have the drops put in my ears and have them rubbed - the vet assistants said that I am very well behaved and that they think I'm wonderful! Mom has to put the stuff in my ears for about 2 weeks and I don't mind at all, I like to be scratched and rubbed and loved up. After my family finished dinner last night we went to what I call "PLAY LAND" to visit two other boxers that used live at Boxer Rescue as well. This was so much fun. Tyson, Cash and I played for about an hour and a half steady, jumping, boxing, rolling, sniffing, and lots of running in their back yard - it was amazing. Mom cried when she saw me playing cause she wasn't sure how I'd play, she worries to much I think...she says she feels so good about my personality and is very proud of me! I was tired after all that playing but hope that we go back again soon - I heard mom talking with Tyson and Cash's mom and dad and they are planning on taking all of us for a run out at Westwood Lake on the weekend - I can't wait!
So....as you can see I am very happy here with my new family and friends and want to thank you ladies for finding them for me. This is the family that I am supposed to be with because they tell me that it is not a coincidence and that I was sent to them from someone named "Poppy" who lives up in heaven... I am told that Poppy, who died 8 years ago on September 11th, has the same birthday as me. I think I am the luckiest dog in the world to have such a loving caring family!

I have tried to attach a couple of pictures but not sure that I'm doing it right - I will get some help and send more along later.
There is a picture of me sleeping, me with Danika, me with Courtney and me with the two little ones and their mom that I adore so much.
